Wine growing in Haspengouw
Wine growing in Haspengouw is on the rise.
We are actively participating in Nieuwerkerken. In 2021 we planted 928 vines of resistant grape varieties.
Prof. Dr. Ghishlain Houben from Wijndomein Hoenshof is our guide in the wonderful world of wine growing.
Resistant grape varieties
Is it possible to make red wine in Haspengouw? That question is sometimes asked. At Le Maar we put it to the test and just go for it. We do that with the help of two resistant grape varieties, which should be a little better at coping with the climate of our region.
Cabernet Cortis
These vines come from the German Palatinate. The wines of Cabernet Cortis are powerful, have strong tannins and give aromas of cassis, cherry and violets.
Merlot Khorus
Like the classic Merlot grape, this hybrid variety provides
for good sugar levels, with many hints of red fruit.
Our sticks come from beautiful Venice.
And the wine?
That is still in full swing. In October and November '21 the first harvest took place, in October '22 a second time. We have already done a few tests with our first wine, but the real result of those picking days is quietly maturing in our cellar...
2022
Cabernet & Merlot
Our 2022 Cabernet and Merlot are resting nicely in barrels... In any case, there was already a clear difference noticeable during the picking with the harvest of the previous year: thanks to the good summer in 2022, the grapes were already much softer in taste than in 2021. Curious to see what will come of that !
2021
White of the Blacks
Making white wine from blue grapes? Yes, indeed!
In our first harvest year we kept some Merlot grapes aside, and the skins were removed immediately after pressing to preserve the white color.
2021
Cabernet & Merlot
Our 2022 Cabernet and Merlot are resting nicely in barrel... In a few months we will know whether this wine is starting to become ready.
Would you like to enjoy the first Le Maar wines?
We expect to be able to distribute our 2021 Cabernet-Merlot at the end of 2023. We will sell about 200 bottles for the benefit of the non-profit organization Stal ter Cose .
You can reserve a maximum of 2 bottles per person, for the price of €50.
